Christchurch - Meeting Destination in the South of New Zealand

Christchurch - or Garden City - is the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand and also an independent local authority in the Canterbury region. The city owes its name to Oxford College Christ Church - the Mãori name of the city is Õtautahi: named after a Mãori chief.

The urban area of Christchurch is bounded to the northwest by the Waimakariri to the southwest by the Selwyn District administrative area. The city also lies on the Pacific Ocean - the center of the city is located northwest of the Banks Peninsula. The Avon River/ Õtakaro flows through the city. In the north, the Waimakariri River passes the city.

Today, about 350,000 people live in the catchment area and the city itself. The region is now home to numerous new economy companies. The establishment of the University of Canterbury and the close cooperation between academic institutions and regional companies have led to strong economic growth.
