The capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt is located directly on the Elbe River and is one of the three major centers of the state. With a population of around 250,000, Magdeburg is the second largest city in Saxony-Anhalt after Halle an der Saale and the fifth largest city in the new federal states.
The city was first mentioned in a document in 805. In the late Middle Ages, the city on the Elbe was one of the largest German cities and the center of the Reformation.
The city at the intersection of the Elbe, Elbe-Havel and Mittelland Canal has an important inland port and is an important industrial and commercial center. Of economic importance are mechanical and plant engineering, the health sector, environmental technologies, logistics and the manufacture of chemical products, iron and steel products.
The city also offers cultural richness. There are many important cultural institutions in the city, including the Magdeburg Theater and the Museum of Cultural History.
